Vacheron Constantin is one of the oldest watch makers in the world, founded in 1755 in Geneva, Switzerland by Jean-Marc Vacheron. Little did he know that 250 years later, his company would be one of the finest watch makers in the world. Innovative, Vacheron decided to venture from watches and patented the first "complication" in 1770, allowing watches to offer more than just a dial and arms. Nine years later, Vacheron launched the world’s first engine turned dials. The company continued to release updated technology for watch making over time, setting the standards for the time. In 1785 the company passed to Abraham Vacheron, Jean-Marc's son.
Abraham Vacheron had studied the art of watchmaking under his and was able to release more products under the company than his father had made. Overtime, the demand for wristwatches was on the rise. Even with the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, Vacheron Constantin pressed on and made it through. The company progressed and hired Georges-Auguste Leschot in 1839. Leschot was initially hired to oversee manufacturing, but soon became a watch designer for the company. Leschot created calibers which standardize watch movements, bringing the watch industry together. His innovations continue to affect the watch industry today.
Under Jaques-Barthelemy, Abraham Vacheron's son, the company began to export their products to France and Italy. In 1919, Vacheron was unable to handle his growing company and partnered with François Constantin. The company officially became known as Vacheron Constantin. As a result, the company began to branch out to new markets like North America. In a letter from Constantin to Vacheron, Constantin says, "Do better if possible and that is always possible." This quote became the company's motto, and is still used today.
After continued success, Vacheron Constantin opened their first brand specific shop in Geneva in 1906. Over the years, the company released many innovative and exceptional timepieces including the world’s thinnest mechanical watch and the most expensive watch ever made, known as the Kallista. At the time, the timepiece was valued at $5 million dollars. Today, The Kallista would sell for around $11 million dollars. This exquisite timepiece took watchmakers 6,000 hours to make and boasts quite a few precious stones and metals.
Today, the company continues to enjoy success and produces about 20,000 products per year. They offer a range of collections including Metier d’Art, Overseas, Egerie, and Les Masques. When you want a timepiece that has been centuries in the making, opt for a watch created by the historical watchmakers at Vacheron Constantin.
