In 1946, Hans Wilsdorf began Tudor. The name was derived from the Tudor period as a way to honor that time in English history. Rolex Tudor was conceived from the beginning as the "second" Rolex brand, with more moderate and affordable prices. Rolex Tudor always took advantage of their direct connection to Rolex to spread their product and improve their sales. Like traditional Rolex watches, Rolex Tudor watches are sold through official and authorized Rolex retailers in Europe, Asia, China, Canada and Latin America. However, the Tudor brand is not currently available for sale in the United States.
Though Tudor is a “second” company of Rolex, the two companies are very different. The Tudor watches feature valijoux movements that were specifically modified for these watches, as well as exotic dials. The Rolex Tudor Montecarlo series is one of the most famous with diverse colors and designs. Over time, it became clear that Rolex Tudor chonograph movements evolved from manual to automatic. They also feature deeper cases and plastic crystals. The majority of Tudor watches were made in Stainless Steel, but some versions are available in 14K and 18K yellow gold or a combination of stainless steel and gold.
Each Tudor watch dial features the famous Tudor Rose. This heraldic emblem was taken from the Tudor period in England. However, in the 1960s the symbol was changed to the current shield. Up until the 1990s, Rolex signed bracelets and crowns were also part of the Tudor model design.
Similarly to Rolex, Tudor has created specialized watches for particular clients. For example, French Navy divers used Rolex Tudor watches during the 1960s and beyond. In addition, the same Tudor model was used by the US Navy for its UDT and the Navy Seals. Along with aiding military and sportsmen, Tudor also appealed to the rich and famous. In 1997, Rolex signed a contract with famous golfer Tiger Woods to sponsor the Rolex Tudor Prince Chronograph. The first Rolex Tudor Chronograph Tiger Woods model was available with a variety of colored displays. This was a pioneering effort into exotic colored dials on Rolex Tudor’s part, but it paid off.
Though Tudor is a subset of Rolex, it is still part of the Rolex company and brand. Like Rolex, Tudor watches are skillfully designed and produced to offer the highest level of precision and reliability. If you are considering purchasing a Rolex watch, do not hesitate to consider a stunning and more moderately priced Rolex Tudor.
